CARE FOR YOUR JEWELLERY IN THE SUMMER!

Be Cool this Summer
By Chelsea Bold

The days are getting longer and the sun is getting hotter, this means only one thing – Summer is fast approaching. This means lazy days by the beach, barbeques with family and friends, outdoor recreation, and vacations to fun locations. This is also the time when your winter wardrobe goes into boxes and you can finally unpack all your fun, light and airy summer clothing.

And what goes better with a summer wardrobe than fun, bold jewellery pieces. Summer outfits pair very nicely to name necklaces and other pieces of personalised jewellery. But if you are going to be wearing your personalised name necklace during the hot summer months, you will want to make sure it stays in pristine condition so it can be worn all the time. Below is some great advice to ensure the sparkle stays and your jewellery is always looking brand new.

Pool, Water & Chlorine

Before you decide to go and cool off in a pool or take a relaxing dip in the hot tub, take off all your jewellery. The chlorine that is poured into pools and hot tubs contain chemicals that will discolor and eventually damage your jewellery. Chlorine also erodes metal and eats the finish off of gemstones. Jewellery should also be removed prior to going into salt water, such as seas and oceans. The salt can greatly damage your jewellery.

All jewellery should be removed prior to putting on any kind of lotion or spray, including tanning lotion, sun block, or bug spray. The chemicals associated with these products can cause the metal finish to break down and will make any piece of jewellery look dull and dingy. If you have jewellery with any kind of gemstones or crystals, the lotion can get caught in the crevices, like in prongs, causing issues with the jewellery further down the road.

Jewellery should be cleaned when taken off at the end of the day. Body oils and sweat dulls shine and tarnishes the metal. Take a soft cloth to your jewellery and polish all the pieces, ensuring your jewellery looks as new as the day you purchased it.

Lastly, but certainly not least important, always get your jewellery checked by a professional jeweler before the start of the summer, especially if your jewellery has special features like gemstones and crystals. Ensure all the prongs are not broken and the clasp to any necklace or bracelet is sturdy. Whether you are going on a long hike or playing beach volleyball, you want to make sure your jewellery stays put.

Just because it is hot doesn’t mean you can’t be fashionable and keep your jewellery looking new!. Now that you know how to care for your jewellery in the hot summer months, take a look at some of the sizzling new summer styles:
